A case study of a resort hotel in Northern Europe

A case study of a resort hotel in Northern Europe

This boutique resort hotel located in the Rovden Islands of Norway has a total construction area of 12,000 square meters. It is composed of a renovated old fishing village warehouse (Rorbu) and a newly built modern landscape architectural complex. The design concept is "respecting nature and paying tribute to history". To comply with the "environmental lighthouse" architectural standards of Norway and the landscape protection regulations in the vicinity of the World Heritage Site, the owner requires a shading and enclosure system that can withstand the harsh climate of the North Atlantic, resist high salt fog corrosion, and fully integrate into the original fishing village style.
Owner's Requirements and Challenges
Extremely marine climate: In this region, strong northerly winds of hurricane force prevail during winter, with wind speeds reaching up to 45 meters per second, and the air contains extremely high levels of salt. Sunshade products must possess extremely strong wind resistance and corrosion resistance, and also provide excellent insulation performance during the polar night.
Historical preservation: The hotel features several 18th-century wooden structures from a fishing village. The local cultural heritage protection department strictly prohibits any drilling or visible modern renovations on the exterior.
Sustainability verification: The materials must meet the requirements of the "Nordic Swan Ecolabel" in Northern Europe and the embodied carbon requirements for future zero-carbon building operations.
Unique polar experience: Guests hope to effectively block the "midnight sunlight" during the polar day to ensure a good sleep, and during the polar night, they want the window frames to blend seamlessly with the indoor environment so as not to interfere with the viewing of the aurora and the peaceful night scenery of the fishing village.
Solution Product technical parameters
Material: Aviation-grade corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy + Closed-cell polyurethane foam filling
Wind resistance rating: Passed EN 12211 C5 level test (capable of withstanding extremely strong hurricanes)
Corrosion resistance: Passed the salt spray test at ISO 12944-9 CX level (the highest anti-corrosion level for offshore marine engineering), and the surface adopts deep-sea grade oxidation sandblasting technology, with a weather resistance of over 30 years.
Thermal insulation performance: When the composite wall is combined with the roller shutter system, the overall heat transfer coefficient U value drops as low as 0.8 W/(m²·K), effectively blocking the severe cold in the Arctic Circle.
Environmental Certification: The profiles and filling materials are free of chlorofluorocarbons and can be fully recycled. The EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) has been certified by the Norwegian Standards Institute.
Customized Design
1. Climate Adaptation Design:
Wind resistance and anti-corrosion: The system adopts concealed reinforced steel core guide rails, combined with magnetic sealing technology, without exposed screws. The surface treatment uses a fluorocarbon spraying process specially developed for cross-sea bridges, ensuring no rust or color fading even in a salt spray environment for 30 years.
Day and Night Extremity Mode:
Daylight mode: The interior of the shading curtains is coated with a highly reflective heat-insulating layer, which can block 95% of solar radiation and ultraviolet rays, ensuring that the guest rooms remain completely dark during the summer daylight hours.
Extreme Night Mode: The curtain box and window casing adopt a minimalist suspended design. When the curtains are folded up, they are completely hidden within the cavity of the wall. There is no obstruction to the view outside the window. Combined with the adjustable light floor lamp, it creates an unbounded visual experience of "the window is a painting".
2. Historical Building Conservation Plan:
Non-destructive installation technology: For the parts of century-old historical buildings, we abandon the traditional bracket installation method. Instead, we use specially designed robotic arms to support from the inside out, and utilize the original stone or wooden beam structure of the window openings for tension fixation. The entire installation process did not cause any damage to the original exterior walls, perfectly preserving the original appearance of the cultural heritage.
3. High-end intelligent integration:
Weather sensing prediction: The system integrates real-time data from the local meteorological bureau and is equipped with independent wind speed, humidity, and light sensors. When it detects a wind speed exceeding 20 meters per second or a severe snowstorm is approaching, the system will automatically retract and protect all external sunshades, without the need for manual intervention.
Environmental light simulation: Collaborated with a top Danish lighting brand. Atmosphere lighting strips were embedded in the roller shutter box. When the curtains were closed, the lights could simulate the deep blue of the Norwegian polar night or the brilliant green of the aurora borealis, creating an immersive Arctic-themed guest room in coordination with the interior designer.
Implementation process
Historical archive modeling: The design team retrieved the original architectural drawings of Norwegian national archives and combined with 3D laser scanning to conduct millimeter-level reverse modeling of each window opening of the ancient buildings, ensuring that the tension support system perfectly fit the original structure.
Integrated land-sea transportation with zero interference: After all the materials are prefabricated at the Trondheim factory, they are directly transported to the Lofoten Islands via shipping containers and then delivered to the final destination by small electric vessels, thus avoiding the damage caused by heavy trucks to the fragile ecology and narrow roads on the island.
Outcomes and Feedback
Energy-saving performance:
Despite being located within the Arctic Circle, the hotel's heating energy consumption has decreased by 55% compared to before the renovation (thanks to a significant improvement in sealing technology).
It has obtained the "Powerhouse" standard pre-certification from the Norwegian National Energy Agency, becoming one of the first buildings in the Arctic Circle to undergo historical renovation with near-zero energy consumption.
Protection and Experience: A Win-Win Situation
The Norwegian Cultural Heritage Agency gave the "non-destructive installation" plan the highest rating, considering it as a model for the modernization of historical buildings.
In its first year of operation, the hotel was honored by "Lonely Planet" and "Condé Nast Traveler" for its "ultra-luxurious light and shadow experience" and its "silent integration into nature" features, and was named the world's best newly-opened sustainable hotel.
Customer's Comment
"When undertaking the renovation in the Arctic Circle, we were confronted with fierce winds, huge waves, and an unapproachable history. MINGCHEN not only provided shade but also offered a comprehensive solution that integrates marine engineering anti-corrosion standards, ancient architecture protection logic, and high-end hotel experience. Now, when guests enjoy the aurora through the floor-to-ceiling windows in the century-old fishing village house, no one can notice that there are the most advanced technologies hidden here. This is exactly what we aim for - invisible protection and natural comfort."
